Professional Conduct at BDW

6/8/2013

Apparently, in Chinese news, a hot topic is about students being hit (or physically reprimanded) by teachers.  This is not concerned with the conduct of foreign teachers, however, I think it's prudent to remind everyone about the school's policy on this matter.

Foreign teachers are not permitted to proactively physically engage with students.  This means:

* no touching any body part
* no pushing
* no turning
* no lifting
* never touch a students head

The only acceptable contact is to offer a high 5 where the student volunteers to place their hand onto yours.  The only other time it is feasible to touch as student is if you judge that a student(s) is at serious risk of harm if you do not intervene.

Another point to note is that pointing at students (or anyone) with one finger is deemed very rude in China (as it is in most Western countries).  Please, never point to students.  Instead, use open palm gestures.

I know this policy is a little bit of a can of worms and want to discuss it with you, in meetings, in due course.

Finally, I wish to remind you that, as foreign teachers, we have no power to automatically expel a student from the classroom.  If you are having management issues with a student(s), then leave the room and ask for your Branch Manager to remove them for you.  Do not send your Chinese Teacher to get the BM as you are then vulnerable with no reliable witnesses.  You must explain to the BM the issue at hand.  The student will then be spoken to by the BM, outside the classroom and then returned once the BM is satisfied that the issue has been dealt with.  It is the BM's final decision that decides to return a student into the classroom.

An incident form will be filled out by the BM and sent to the executive.  Foreign teachers are encouraged to speak with the executive if they have any concerns regarding classroom management issues.  If you have any questions regarding any matters in this post, either see me or raise your concerns at the next meeting.

Reminders regarding BDW Children's Day

30/5/2013

Hello Everyone

In two days time, BDW Children' Day will be in operation.  The following are a few reminders for everyone to help have a smooth running day:

* Please know your scheduled arrival time at Gate 3 of Nan Hu Park.

* Places on vans are limited.  First come is first served.  If you don't take the van, be aware that traffic in teh Nan Hu area will be VERY busy.

* Whilst water and snacks will be available, you are advised to bring extra, just in case.

* Fingers crossed it will be a pleasant day, but I recommend you bring a hat to help protect you from the sun.

* SAFETY FIRST!  We want everyone to have a good time.  Please alert your Chinese partner at the first sign of anything that might compromise the safety of anyone at any time.  That includes yourself, your colleagues, students and their friends and parents and any member of the public.

* If you have any questions regarding this event, please contact either myself or Maria at any time.

Thank you and I look forward to seeing you all on Saturday!

Park Day 1st June 2013

27/5/2013

Picture
The photo on the left is of the Independence Monument, just inside Gate 3 of Nan Hu Park, Changchun.  This is the exact location of where we will be hosting our students for Children's Day, this coming Saturday.

At today's Branch and Friday's Kinder Meeting you will receive a schedule and Activity/Zone summary.  If you are not going to be at either meeting, please, please call Maria to get your copy.  Please make it your business to make sure you know the following:

* Where the venue is.

* How you plan to get there (vans are available on a first come first served basis, otherwise make your own way to the park and know that the surrounding area will be HEAVILY congested).

* know what your activity is and how it is to be executed.

* Above all, keep yourself and the whole day safe for your colleagues and, of course, our students and have fun!

Please do not hesitate to call either myself, Maria or Linda if you have any further questions.

Adjustments to Park Day

18/5/2013

Just to keep you informed...

Jenga has been dropped.  The Jenga supplier can't deliver in time, so I am blowing up the BDW Bob, Dot and Will alphabet snakes and ladder board to 5m x 5m.

Also, as you may know, we advertise with a local mums n kids website and they want to bring around 100 small children to our event.  This will be a co-promotion.  We will now be holding 4 parties instead of 3.  This does not really affect FTs, per say, you'll all be hosting just the one event, but just so you know, some of you may be hosting from 12:00 midday to 1:30.  I hope to have a full schedule available for you to see on Monday and Friday at your respective meetings.  Thank you.

May 18th, 2013

18/5/2013

Former BDW teacher, Rebecca Smith, has very kindly put together a very detailed document regarding her experience in getting her two cats out of China and to the USA.  Different species have different requirements and it all depends on where you want to send your pets.

BDW strongly urges foreign teacher not to take on a pet, in China, unless they can absolutely guarantee it's well being after the teacher ceases to teach in China.

For anyone else that sends their pets overseas, I'd be most grateful if you could keep a log of what you needed to do, along with any resources that can then be added to this website.
